Safety Training Case Study: How I Designed Ergonomics Safety Training Using an ADDIE Approach

One of the safety training projects I especially enjoyed at Purple focused on ergonomics and stretching for manufacturing employees.

Because many employees were lifting, twisting, pulling, and performing other repetitive physical tasks throughout the day, safe movement habits mattered. The broader business goal was to support safer behavior in the workplace and help contribute to Purple’s effort to keep Total Recordable Incident Rates below 1%.

From an ADDIE perspective, the need was fairly clear during the analysis phase: employees needed an easy, repeatable way to learn proper stretching techniques and understand why those movements mattered before and during physically demanding work.

To support that need, I helped create a blended learning solution that combined video, LMS-based instruction, and visual reinforcement on the floor.

In the design and development phases, I filmed and edited an external consultant as he demonstrated and explained each stretch. I also added closed captions to the videos to improve accessibility and make the training more inclusive for a wider range of learners. From there, I helped incorporate the videos into an LMS course that provided additional context on stretching and its benefits.

To reinforce the learning beyond the course itself, I also photographed one of my teammates performing the stretches and used those images to create a branded instructional poster for the facility. That poster served as an on-the-job reminder, helping extend the training from a one-time learning experience into the daily work environment.

What I like about this project is that it reflects how I think about instructional design in real workplaces. Training is rarely most effective when it lives in only one format. In this case, the strongest solution was not just an LMS course. It was a combination of accessible video instruction, supportive learning content, and environmental reinforcement that made the desired behavior easier to remember and apply.

For me, this project is a solid example of using ADDIE to support behavior change through practical, learner-centered safety training.
